WebIn 1555, Peter Canisius published his famous catechism. It was a large, in modern additions, two-volume catechism. It was the first real catechism by Catholics ever printed. The Protestants had had catechisms for over thirty years. WebCanisius's set of three catechisms – the Large, Smalland Smaller– were the most popular and widely available Catholic catechisms in sixteenth-century Germany: by his death, at least 357 editions had appeared, in a number of languages.
